Vertere Acoustics has unveiled an updated version of its compact Phono-1 phono preamplifier, the Vertere Acoustics Phono-1 LX . Externally, the new product largely maintains the same design as previous models in the line: it's the same discreet device, with the main changes hidden within the housing.
The Vertere Acoustics Phono-1 phono preamplifier has been updated several times over the past nine years, and the new LX version is hailed by the manufacturer as the most significant evolution of the platform. Vertere notes that the original model received the MkII update in 2019, followed by the Phono-1 MkII L in 2022, and now the Phono-1 LX continues its development.
In creating this new product, the company leveraged the expertise of its flagship Calon phono preamplifier, a dual-mono design unveiled at the 2024 High End Munich exhibition. Thus, the Phono-1 LX is positioned not as a completely new product, but rather as a thoroughly redesigned version of an already proven design.
The previous version of the Phono-1 MkII L featured a gold-plated L-shaped printed circuit board, a redesigned internal layout, and easier access to the DIP switches. It also retained the extensive tuning options for both MM and MC cartridges: ten gain settings, fifteen input impedance settings, and nine capacitance settings.
The Vertere Acoustics Phono-1 LX phono preamplifier has further refined this foundation. The new product features an improved printed circuit board, a redesigned internal DC power supply, improved AC input filtering, a new two-position ground lift switch, a redesigned case and cover, and the signature blue-green power LED.
According to Vertere Acoustics, the new printed circuit board features a higher-quality gold plating, which should ensure more stable solder joints across the entire surface. The redesigned DC power supply, in turn, is designed to deliver cleaner and more stable power to the circuitry. This is especially important for the phono preamplifier, as the signal from the cartridge is extremely weak, meaning noise, grounding, and power supply stability directly impact the final sound.
Particular attention was paid to noise filtering. A dedicated choke is installed at the AC input to block high-frequency interference before the signal reaches the circuit. An additional choke is located after the transformer and provides another stage of filtering before power is supplied to the DC circuits. The grounding system has also been simplified: a new two-position switch allows you to choose between ground lift and ground connection, depending on the specific audio system.
The Vertere Acoustics Phono-1 LX phono preamplifier remains a recognizable member of the Phono-1 family, but features a more refined finish. The new cover features a subtle silver metallic texture, and the removal of the four top mounting screws creates a more refined appearance. The manufacturer claims a darker background, expanded dynamics, a more precise soundstage, and a more natural vocal reproduction.
